Meetings & Events – Malta George Cross Island Association (G.C.I.A)- Ferndown

March 13th, 2015 West Branch Pedestal commemorative event
For the fourth year running West Branch held the now traditional annual commemorative ceremony to remember and honour those who took part in Pedestal Convoy and who suffered during the WWII Siege of Malta 1942.

As in previous years, it was held at Ferndown British Legion Club, Church Road with the rain staying off so that we could all go outside into the memorial garden for the wreath laying ceremony.

Our Chairman, Ray Wrigglesworth, along with the rest of the committee, welcomed our honoured guests Mike Parkes, the Mayor of Ferndown, National Chairman and National Secretary of the George Cross Association as honoured guests.

It is with great pleasure that I announce we have a new standard bearer, Barry Wenman, and following some guidance and instruction from SE Vice Chairman and standard bearer, Edward Barkway, Barry proudly paraded the West Branch standard.

The day commenced with a service in the memorial gardens, with 4 standards being paraded, West Branch, South East, National, and we were honoured that Retired Royal Marine Sharkey Ward paraded their standard along with us. The wreath was laid by the Mayor Ferndown, accompanied by Pedestal veteran and Branch President, Charles Grant and GCIA National Chairman Julia Gaw. Our able Parade Marshall was Michael Gaw and our M.C. Keith Abnett who sincerely thank for ably conducting the business of the day.

Ray Wrigglesworth welcomed and thanked honoured guests and members and our National Chairman Mrs Julia Gaw, before we settled down to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the Mike, the Chef and the catering staff of the Ferndown British Legion Cub. During lunch, Gordon Whitehead, provided a lovely blend of background music.

At the end of the meal the Mayor of Ferndown said a few words about how he had discovered a great deal about the history of the Pedestal Convoy and the GCIA, he said how pleased he was to be invited and how much he had enjoyed the day. We are very grateful to the support that the Mayor gives to our events and thank him.

The Chairman thanked everyone for their support and we all gave well-deserved thanks to the caterers and to all those involved in making the event so successful. Just before we ended the day, Member, Brian Randall sang to us again this year? hopefully Brian will be in good voice for our Reunion weekend in October ! Another big thank must be given to Tony Ansell for displaying his amazing models  which were of great interest and talking point.

So once again, we had a very congenial day which was enjoyed by all who attended, including some who had travelled great distances and we thank them and everyone else for their support. Let?s hope we can do it all again in 2016.

Following a motion carried by our members at the 2014 AGM, this year’s AGM will be held over the same weekend as the National AGM, which the West Branch is hosting. We are looking at the event taking place at the Bridge Hotel, Ferndown with the branch AGM in the afternoon of the October 9th, followed by an informal evening meal.

The National AGM will take place on the morning of the 10th with the afternoon free and an evening Gala dinner. If you could note down the dates  9th to 11th in your diaries
